In the elections on Thursday May 4th 2023, voters in Wigan Borough can select 3 candidates.

This is called an “all-out” election – so all seats in the Wigan Town Hall chamber are up for grabs.

Wigan Borough’s Ward boundaries have changed as there needs to be roughly the same number of people in each Ward for the council to assign services appropriately. As new homes are built in some areas, or other areas see baby booms, the number of residents in each Ward constantly changes. So to even the numbers up, some Wards lose streets or some gain them. Some lose streets from one side of the Ward and gain from the other side!

Who made this decision?

The new boundaries were consulted on over the past couple of years. The decisions are made by the independent Local Government Boundary Commission, not Wigan Council officers or the councillors – although councillors were consulted and could have a say on the proposals.

The reason all 3 councillors have to be voted for on May 4th 2023 is that the “new” residents in the Wards haven’t voted for their elected members previously, so to make it fair for everyone in all areas, the board is wiped clean and all residents in the re-jigged Wards get to choose – it’s the most democratic way of deciding who represents you in the council chamber.

Your Wigan CLP Labour team has fielded 3 candidates for each Ward, many of whom are already councillors and have been working hard together with their Labour volunteers and supporters to make Wigan Borough a better place to live.

We want to ensure Labour voters get out and use their vote on May 4th to send a message to the Tories that this country needs real change!

Delivering results on a tight budget

As a Labour-controlled council, Wigan Council has had some great achievements over the past few years, including winning UK Council of the Year 2021. We think that’s a pretty great accolade and, despite facing arguably the most difficult few years in recent history, the council is delivering on running an efficient service despite huge funding cuts.

The Tories have slashed government funding to local councils. Recently Wigan Council said it has lost 40p in every pound of government funding compared to the previous decade. It has had to slash the budget and has managed to do so while still providing award-winning services.

Your Wigan Labour pledges to you are:

  • A FULLY COSTED BUDGET WITH NO CUTS TO SERVICES OR JOBS.
  • THE LOWEST COUNCIL TAX IN GREATER MANCHESTER.
  • SUPPORTING OUR SOCIAL CARE WORKERS WITH THE FOUNDATION LIVING WAGE (AS A MINIMUM HOURLY WAGE).
  • EXPANDING APPRENTICESHIPS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE.
  • CONTINUING FREE WEEKEND CAR PARKING FOR OUR TOWN CENTRE CAR PARKS.
  • SUPPORTING THE WASPI CAMPAIGN

We hope that you will support your hard-working Labour councillors and candidate at the ballot box this year – and would like to thank our members and supporters for keeping us going through difficult times.

3 votes for Labour on 4th May!
