The Extra Care flats on the site of the former school on Miles Lane are nearing completion.
They will be social rent houses for over-55s, and you need to be on the social housing register if you are interested in renting one.
Councillor Crosby, Collins and Galligan have been part of the building process and had two site visits, plus a visit to a completed facility in Ashton.
The 32-flat facility will be called Meadow View, as there are amazing views over the fields at the back of the complex towards Shevington Vale.
The access road will be called Gray Lane, named after local legend and schoolteacher Neville “Ned” Gray. He was a much-loved member of the Miles Lane (Shevington Community Primary) school which was demolished on the site. Mr Gray passed away in 2023 and there was an outpouring of grief among the Shevington community, as he was so well-loved by so many.

A range of housing for over-55s in Wigan

Wigan Council’s Extra Care Facilities are providing one-floor, accessible living to people who are in their later years, and to people with additional needs for whom alternative social housing is not suitable.
There are now several Extra Care complexes across the borough, which also have communal lounges so residents can get together should they with to enjoy community activities.

They include:

  •  Eldervale Extra Care, Whitebeam Close, Beech Hill, Wigan – A mixed-residential development with 48 one-bedroom apartments, 3 two-bedroom apartments, 18 new-build bungalows, and extensive gardens and terraces.
  • Wickham Hall, Knightshill Cres, Springfield, Wigan – Wickham Hall provides 35 spacious purpose-built 1 and 2 bedroom apartments with access to Extra Care services.

In addition to this, the council and housing associations provide many other sheltered accommodation and care home options. We would encourage anyone who is thinking of downsizing or whose property has become unsuitable to contact the council about their options.

Two open days for the Meadow View Extra Care are being held in October 2024 and we are encouraging local people to view – even if you won’t live there, you can tell people you know about them.
