Wigan Borough had a successful election night on May 4th, 2023, with 64 seats across the borough being won by Labour councillors. This was a rise of 3 seats compared to 2022. The Conservative Party lost 5 seats across the Borough, and Independent candidates gained 2.

Although Labour had an overall gain, we were sad to lose a long-serving councillor, Jim Moodie, lose his seat in Ince. Ward colleagues Cllrs David Molyneux and Janice Sharratt said: “We would like to say a massive thank you to our friend and colleague former Councillor Jim Moodie, who proudly served the communities of Ince and Scholes for the last 20 years.

“He worked relentlessly to improve this ward and to give local people a strong voice within the town hall.

“He’s supported hundreds of local residents over the years with individual issues always making time to listen and ensure that everyone had the support they required.

“Jim’s built strong links with our local schools, community groups and sporting teams helping them to access funding, volunteering and offering guidance.

“Thank you Jim for being a great ambassador for our community.”

As the all-out elections meant all 75 seats were up for grabs, the councillors were awarded 1, 3 or 4 year terms, depending on their position in the polling numbers. So campaigning for the candidates for the 2024 elections will begin almost straight away, with our strategies being discussed in our upcoming CLP meeting.

Members, please check your email inboxes for details of the next CLP meeting or contact your local councillors for information on local campaign days.
