They say a week is a long time in politics… and never has there been a truer word!
No sooner were local elections over on 5th May, and we swore in new Mayor Debbie Parkinson in Wigan Town Hall on 22nd May, did Rishi Sunak announce the General Election for 4th July.
The locals were a success for Wigan Borough’s Labour team, retaining the same number of councillors in the chamber – although we lost one Labour Councillor in Ince, the formidable Janice Sharratt, we gained a Tory seat in Lowton East, which Mike Smith takes up. Congratulations to Mike, and best wishes to Janice who is a massive asset to her local community and will continue to be so.
Cllr Debbie Parkinson stepped up to the mayoral mantle as Cllr Kevin Anderson stepped down, and Cllr Jenny Bullen became Deputy Mayor. And before the mayor’s chains could be put back in the case for the day, Rishi Sunak addressed the UK in a soggy Downing Street.
Let’s get Lisa Nandy re-elected!
Wigan CLP is looking forward to joining our MP Lisa Nandy on her re-election campaign. Lisa has fought hard for Wigan and the North in Parliament during her 14 years as our MP, and as Shadow Secretary of State for International Development she is also making her name known on a global playing field. Please follow her social media pages if you don’t already, and give her lots of support!
