It was with great sadness that the Wigan Labour Family recently lost Cllr George Davies, otherwise known as “Mr Likeable”.
In the heart of Wigan, few individuals have left as profound an impact as George, a retired NHS worker and long-serving Unison representative.
Known not only for his professional dedication but also for his unwavering commitment to the community, George’s journey is a testament to the influence one person can have on many lives.
A Life of Service in Healthcare
Before retiring, George served as a hospital porter at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, where he became a vital support system for both patients and staff. His role as a Unison representative allowed him to stand up for colleagues’ rights, fight against the privatisation of essential services, and actively participate in campaigns that improved healthcare conditions. George took great pride in witnessing the hospital’s advancements, including decreasing waiting lists and the introduction of new scanners, which have significantly enhanced patient care.
A Welcomed Community Champion
Since being elected in 2010, George has been a comforting presence in the community. Regularly attending church breakfasts at St. Stephen’s and numerous local events, he has always been ready to lend an ear to those in need. Whether collecting enquiries or promoting community welfare initiatives, George’s dedication shone through. His efforts extended to installing important medical equipment, like a defibrillator and bleed kit at the Armed Forces HQ, ensuring that the community is well-equipped to handle emergencies.
Fighting for Responsible Housing Practices
In 2021, George campaigned vigorously for the implementation of Article 4, which introduced stricter regulations on Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in Swinley. This initiative aimed to control the growing number of properties being converted, ultimately resulting in improved living conditions across the borough. Thanks to his determination and collaboration with his Labour colleagues, these crucial rules came into effect on August 31 this year.
Preserving Local History and Heritage
A passionate local history buff, George dedicated substantial effort to preserving Wigan’s heritage. His interest culminated in the publication of a booklet celebrating the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary’s 150th anniversary in 2023. He has been instrumental in presenting commemorative works and plaques, ensuring that the rich history of Wigan remains cherished and recognised.
Promoting a Cleaner Environment
George’s commitment to the community extended beyond healthcare and history—he was also an advocate for environmental stewardship. Participating in litter picks and collaborating with local councils during Waste Amnesties, he played a key role in beautifying the area. His advocacy resulted in more litter bins being installed in Central Ward, promoting a cleaner, healthier environment for all.
Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour
In partnership with local police, George tackled issues of anti-social behaviour in the area. By attending regular police meetings and organising initiatives targeting street crime, he contributed to making Wigan Central a safer place to live. His proactive approach underscored the importance of community cooperation in addressing local concerns.
George leaves his wife, Tina, and son, Paul, as well as wider family and many friends and colleagues who will miss him immensely.
As we reflect on George’s contributions, we are reminded that heroes often walk among us, quietly making waves of change in their communities. His legacy continues to inspire residents to engage, advocate, and care for one another, reinforcing the spirit of community in Wigan.
